Guided bike tour in Prague

As far as I am concerned, biking with a guide is the best way to get to know a new city. In a short period of time, you get to see a lot of the city. You get information about the place where you are and it gives you the opportunity to ask questions to someone who lives in the city. So obviously, I booked a guided bike tour in Prague when I was there on a city trip with Ernestina.

We booked our bike tour through Bajabikes. This is a company where you can book bike tours in several cities. They do not organize bike tours themselves but outsource this to a local company in the city. In Prague, the bike tours are organized by my Prague tours who give tours in Dutch, German and English. (You can also book a bike tour directly through them). Since we wanted to bike on the first day and our train arrived early in the morning, we chose the afternoon tour: the hidden Prague bike tour.

Mijn Praag tours – guided bike tour company in Praag

Mijn Praag tours’ meeting point is located in the city center of Prague, within walking distance of the Staroměstské náměstí (Prague’s famous square). We had lunch at a little restaurant around the corner before the bike tour. (Monk is highly recommended!) We did need some time to figure out the exact location of the office, simply because it is located insite another building. But they included the coordinates of the office in their email, so with Google Maps it wasn’t too hard. (Although, there was a big truck parked in front of the entrance so that was a bit confusing).

The tour must be paid for before departure, and you can pay with either euros or Czech crowns. We biked in a group of eight participants and set off with a Dutch guide. Our guide, Roos, has lived in Prague for a year and a half and knows the city well by now.

Hidden Prague Bike Tour

During the Hidden Prague bike tour you will pass a number of well-known sights in the city. But also the places that you easily pass as a tourist if you don’t know the history of the placre. And for me that makes the tour extra fun. You will see the most famous sights in Prague anyways, and I think it’s more fun to visit the hidden gems and learn more about the history.

Dark history of Prague

During the tour they tell you a lot about the attack on Hitler’s right hand, Heydrich, who is also called the Butcher of Prague. You pass several places that played a role in the attack on his life and the guide will tell you all about it. I found this interesting, but I can imagine it being a bit too extensive if you don’t find history that interesting.

Is cycling in Prague safe?

The fact that the Czech Republic is not a cycling country like the Netherlands is very noticeable in Prague. There are few bike paths and you notice that the traffic is not used to cyclists. Still, I find that cycling in Prague is doable and I never felt unsafe. At my Prague Tours they have decent, well-maintained bikes, so I didn’t worry about that either. I rode a mountain bike with suspension in the handlebars, which was nice on the cobblestone roads. Although I must admit that the roads without cobblestones were a lot nicer. 😉

Experience biking in Prague

Personally, I am very excited about our cycling experience in Prague. We saw quite a lot of the city in just one day. And I do think that you experience a city in a different way when you’re on a bicycle then when you are walking, and I like it a lot. So I definitely will continue to bike in foreign cities if it is possible. (So far I biked in New York, London, Marrakech, Paris, Bangkok and the Austrian mountains.)

I also really liked that we did this at the beginning of our city trip. That way we could visit the places we liked later on during our city trip. And now we had the opportunity to ask our guide for good places that we should visit. And we actually did go to some of the restaurants and bars our guide advised us.
