Camping Otterlo & de Veluwe

At the edge of the of the National Park the Hoge Veluwe lies Camping Otterlo & The Veluwe. Just outside the center of the village with the same name, Otterlo. It is a small campsite on an old farm, where you can completely unwind in nature. Since 2023, I have been staying at this campsite every summer for a weekend with some girlfriends and I am planning to continue this tradition for years.

Camping Otterlo & Camping de Veluwe

Originally, Camping Otterlo & Camping de Veluwe are two different campsites, right next to each other. But now both campsites have the same owner. The campsite consists of several camping fields and two modern sanitary buildings. Camping Otterlo has 30 pitches and Camping de Veluwe has 33. So in total, the campground offers space for 63 campers. There are no accommodations here, so you must come with your own camping equipment.

Camping on artificial grass

The campground consists of three different camping fields. On the camping fields, the spots are not demarcated with plants or bushes. However, there are posts to indicate the size of the pitch. In addition, there is an artificial turf on each camping spot. For campers with a camper or caravan, this is ideal because it eliminates the need for a ground sheet. For tent campers (like us) it’s a bit more complicated, because of course you can’t put pegs in the mat. So you do have to position the tent properly. Some of the tent pits without electricity are based on the grass.

Brand new sanitary facilities

We camped at the Otterlo section of the campground. The sanitary building on this part of the campside was renewed in 2023. The building has mixed toilets and showers, which I do not mind. Everything is well maintained and looks modern. The third year we stayed at the part called de Veluwe. The sanitary building is a little older than the one on the Otterlo part, but still very well maintained.

Camping with Scottish highlanders

One of the camping fields borders a meadow. A large part of the year Scottish highlanders walk in here. Beautiful animals and this really gives you the feeling that you are camping in the middle of nature. I also like the fact that the pitches are only created along the edges of the field. This means that you do not look directly at the neighbors which still gives a sense of freedom.

Camping with children

On small campsite there are quite few facilities, besides the very necessary. For us this was not a problem because we did not need more than clean sanitary facilities. There is a jeux de boules court and a trampoline for children. And a bicycle shed you can use as a camping guest. Most of the guests are elderly couples and we really stood out as a group of young women. Ifyou are looking for a campsite with a bit more activity and entertainment, this is not the place to be. For a weekend of rest on the Veluwe, however, it is highly recommended.

Camping in the Veluwe

Camping Otterlo & the Veluwe is located just outside the center of the village of Otterlo. The center of the village is less than a five-minute drive away. Here you will find some stores, a supermarket and some restaurants. (From the campsite, the center of Otterloo is easily accessible by bicycle or on foot). The national park the Hoge Veluwe is near the campsite. So an ideal base to explore the Veluwe nature. Rather seek out the hustle and bustle? Arnhem, Apeldoorn and Ede are less than half an hour away.

Camping Otterlo & the Veluwe experience

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend at the campground. There is plenty to do in the neighborhood. For example, we tried several restaurants in Otterlo, went to play minigolf in Hoenderloo, visited Arnhem and went hiking. We really liked the campground and plan to go back again in 2026.

Ever since childhood, I have been going camping every year with my parents. After a camping break of a few years, I started tent camping again in 2022. And I really liked it and have been traveling by tent several times since then. (And worked for two years for the number one camping specialist in Europe.) Are you also a camper? Then be sure to read my other camping blogs.
