Mittenwald in Germany: vacation in the mountains
The German village of Mittenwald is located a few kilometers from the border with Austria and is surrounded by the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains. The village is an ideal vacation destination for nature lovers, who also like to visit atmospheric villages. During my vacation in Austria, I visited the German village and I am happy to share my enthusiasm with you.
During my vacation in Austria, I decided to drive towards Seefeld in Tyrol and explore the area. On the advice of a local Austrian, I drove from Seefeld in Tyrol to the German town of Mittenwald, via the mountain road that also passes by the Leutasch Gorge. A nice route of about half an hour through the mountains. Because of the weather (and the fact that it was almost lunchtime), I decided to drive to Mittenwald first and stop at the gorge on the way back (Spoiler alert: it’s really incredibly beautiful and must-see if you’re near Mittenwald).
Painted houses
Mittenwald is a picturesque German village with a cozy center. Although the village has about 7300 inhabitants, there is plenty to do. In the center of Mittenwald you will find mostly tourist stores and small specialty stores. There are also a number of drugstores (a large DM, Muller and a Rosman), clothing stores and sports stores. What impresses most are the facades of the buildings in town. These are painted in cheerful colors and on many of the facades are elaborate works of art. A small river runs straight through the city.
German bretzels
The village of Mittenwald has several restaurants and cozy cafes. According to my parents (who stayed in this area for several days), you can eat out wonderfully here. I chose to eat at one of the many bakeries. And was lured into the store by the smell of freshly baked bretzels. Together with my traveling companion, I ordered some delicious sandwiches at Der Markt Bäckeren and took a seat in the little restaurant at the back of the store. Meanwhile, I had a view of several bakers baking fresh rolls.
What to do in Mittenwald
Since I was vacationing over an hour and a half drive from Mittenwald, I didn’t stay very long in the village. But I still collected some tips for your visit to the village.
– Stroll through the cozy center and enjoy the colorful buildings
– Eat a bretzel, after all, you are in Bayern
– Take a hike through the Leutach Gorge just across the border in Austria. This hike is, in a word, fantastic.
– Go hiking in the surrounding area. Besides the gorge, there are plenty of wonderful hiking trails in this region
– Are you a music lover and love going to museums? Then visit the Geigenbaum Museum. This museum is about violin making in Germany. (We have not been here).
– Admire the St. Peter und Paul church in the center of the village
– Go to the DM (after all, you are in Germany 😉 and this drugstore is a lot cheaper than drugstores in the Netherlands).
