Camping in Vienna
During a citytrip, the obvious thing to do is to stay in a hotel. But did you know that it is often possible to camp near a city? That way you can sleep in a peacefull and quiet environment. Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the city during the day and return to your campsite in the evening. Moreover, camping is often a lot cheaper of staying in a hotel. I went camping in Vienna and I am happy to share my experience.Â
Where do I sleep in Vienna? With that question, I started looking for hotels. Pretty quickly I came to the conclusion that hotels in Vienna are quite pricey. I have camed close to Paris a while ago and I am still very positive about that. So I decided to look for a campsite in Vienna. I found a camp site just outside the city of Vienna on Eurocampings and found out that you can stay there with a discount during low season, if you have an ACSI discount card, CampingCard ACSI. And I happen to have one 😉 With the discount in low season, you pay €21 per night for a camping spot and two people (excluding tourist tax). And yes, that is a lot cheaper than staying in a hotel. (Only if you have camping gear or can borrow someone’s).
Camping in Vienna at Donaupark camping klosterneuburg
During my city trip to Vienna, I camped at Donaupark camping Klosterneuburg in the town with the same name, Klosterneuburg. The campground has 193 camping sites and some rental accommodations. The campground has a small restaurant with a terrace, a small camp store and two sanitary buildings. Right next to the campsite is a playground, on the campsite itself are trampolines which you can use for a fee. The campsite is divided into several sections. A field especially for small tents, a section for tents and camper vans. And fields for campers and caravans. You camp here on grass and the pitches are clearly marked. Paved streets run between the fields.
Cycling to Vienna
Donaupark Camping Klosterneuburg is located directly on a cycle path which leads directly to Vienna. In about an hour you can cycle along the Danube to the Austrian capital. At the campsite you can rent bikes and for half a day you pay € 6 per bike. Of course I took advantage of this offer and got on my bike to Vienna. The bike path is mostly paved, but there are also some gravel sections. The whole path is flat and the route is easy. The city of Vienna is great for cycling and there are a lot of bike paths. If you want to get the most out of cycling through Vienna, make sure you plan a route in advance along the sights you want to see. I cycled to the city center, had lunch somewhere and returned to the campsite. On the second day, I booked a bike tour of Vienna with a Dutch-speaking guide. In order to see all the highlights of the city in a short time and learn all about them. Â
Vienna by train
If you don’t feel like biking to Vienna, you can also take public transport. From Donaupark Camping Klosterneuburg it is less than a 200 meter walk to the train station. From there you can get to Vienna by train in about 20 minutes. I bought a weekly ticket for €17 that allowed unlimited use of all public transport in the city for a week. However, Klosterneuburg is not part of Vienna, so the card was not valid for the last two stops. (I only found out later, so I accidentally traveled without a valid ticket). For €25, you have a train ticket that allows you to travel to Vienna’s suburbs as well. (So make sure you book the right ticket. The fines for undeclared travel in Austria are quite high).Â
Klosterneuburg
During my city trip to Vienna, it was bloody hot in the city. So I didn’t feel like going into the hot city every day. I chose to explore Klosterneuburg as well. Klosterneuburg has some nice stores, restaurants and a large monastery. In my opinion, it is highly recommended to also take a walk through the town while staying at the campground. For the best ice creams you should go to the ice cream parlor and for an affordable lunch you can go to the restaurant at the monastery. There I ate soup and a schnitzel with potato salad for €12.
Camping in Vienna experienceÂ
Camping in Vienna was an incredibly good experience for me. Donaupark campsite Kloserneuburg is a fine campsite. The sanitary facilities are clean, the sites are nice and you can ask all your questions at the reception. I liked the atmosphere at the campground and really enjoyed the combination of a city trip and camping. Especially during the heat wave in Vienna, I enjoyed being able to get out of the city. Â
