Good restaurant in Bruges Chagall

While visiting the Belgian city of Bruges, a dinner in a local restaurant should not be missed. After virtually visiting quite a few restaurants, our choice fell on restaurant Chagall on Sint-Amandsstraat. Mainly because the menu sounded good and most of the reviews are almost positive.

The Sint-Amandsstraat is in my opinion one of the nicest streets in Bruges. The street is car-free, which makes it extra nice to walk through it. When you walk all the way down the street you end up at the Grote Markt. In the street you see mostly brick houses with stepped gables. A building style you see a lot in the city. Restaurant Chagall, at the beginning of the street, stands out thanks to the plastic flowers on the facade.

Atmospheric decor

The cozy restaurant is all in the style of old movie stars. In the past, there were several cinemas and movie houses in the neighborhood. For many locals, it was tradition to have a bite to eat at Chagall’s after the movie. Back then, the traditional spaghetti was the most popular dish. The new owners (who have been running the place since 2019) wanted to keep the old tradition alive. Therefore, the theme is old movie stars. The restaurant is quite small, but it does not feel stuffy at all. The decor is cozy and from the moment we crossed the threshold, it felt like a warm welcome.

Traditional Flemish food

Chagall serves mostly traditional Flemish dishes such as stew and shrimp croquettes. But there are also other dishes on the menu such as truffle pasta and ”tagliata di manzo” beef. There is a choice of fish, meat and pasta dishes. In addition to main courses, salads and desserts. The menu is designed like a newspaper, which adds to the atmosphere. Something different from the standard “black folder” you get at most restaurants.

Truffle pasta

I chose the typical Flemish stew, so did most of my family. Originally this dish is served with applesauce, but I had it replaced with a salad. (I am not a fan of applesauce). My brother went for a tagliata di manzo and my American host mother went for a truffle pasta. Of course, I couldn’t resist sampling a bite of each dish ;). And honestly, everything was delicious. We also decided to have a desert. I chose a cheesecake, which was a good choice. Only point of attention, the whipped cream with the desserts came from a can. And that is a lot less tasty than fresh whipped cream.

A nice dinner in Bruges

Chagall is an absolute must if you are in Bruges. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very cozy and the service is top notch. And of course most importantly, the food is really very tasty. I enjoyed my stew, but must admit that I was especially impressed with the truffle pasta. We are definitely planning to come back again and I already know what I will order. 😉 I can’t wait!
